I told the kids this morning that they don't have school on Monday for Martin Luther King Day. A little while later, Luke came in the office and wanted to tell me what he had learned about MLK at school. He asked where MLK was born, so we looked it up on Wikipedia (he was born in Atlanta). (He also wanted to know if MLK was older or younger than God, but that wasn't on Wikipedia. But he was born in 1929. :)
Luke saw that his name was listed as "Martin Luther King, Jr." and he was trying to read the words. He got to the "Jr." part, and said "J - R". I explained that it was an abbreviation for Junior.
Me: That's Martin Luther King Junior, because he was named after his dad, Martin Luther King. Like, if you were named after your Dad, you'd be Cass Watson Everitt Junior.
Luke: And if Logan was named after you, she'd be Cindy Watson Everitt Junior.
Me: Right. :) :)

MSMS
I recently corresponded with Mr. Brown, the Director of MSMS. Cass and I committed to helping 2 MSMS juniors with tuition this year, and we were due to pay this semester's installment. Since I had to send a check, I looked at their website. It had been pretty pitiful for the past few years, with virtually no updates to the content. But Mr. Brown has gotten 2 students, one of whom is Manoj the Wonder Student, to redesign and update the MSMS website. It really looks great. They have a picture slideshow and a scrolling news area.
In browsing the site, I found that there is now a MSMS blog. It's not as fancy as Blogger, but I understand that they have to have some system of monitoring the students and its content. I was having trouble getting it to come up earlier, but it seems like the server issue has been fixed. It looks like most of the content is the same as the news section of the website.
Back in August, Rick Smith said that he hoped to get the Emissaries to start a blog to help with their recruiting efforts. I haven't heard anything else about that, but I'll keep an ear out.

Medical
I saw my GP for a follow up yesterday. My BP seems to be doing fine on my current medication, so we're sticking with that. He said that normally high BP patients follow up every 3 months, but since I'm young and all my labs are perfect, he doesn't want to see me until 6 months.
I have to admit that I'm not the best at taking medication daily. I have a pill box with days of the week. Last week, I took medicine 4 days of of 7. Maybe I'll get better at it, but for now every other day seems to be OK.
It's kind of weird - when I first started seeing this doc a month ago, it was him and his wife in the practice. I originally called to make an appointment with her, but she wasn't taking new patients. At my first visit, he introduced me to her and told me that she was leaving for a practice in Austin - but they're not splitting up personally (I assume). He talks about her all the time. At the visit yesterday, I heard the receptionist say that she (the lady doc) is gone for good now. Very strange situation. Kind of makes me think that he won't be there forever.
Anyway, I have an appt with an orthopedic surgeon on Thursday for him to look at the cyst on my knee. Hopefully he can drain it and get it back to normal. It's about time for me to be able to get back out and ride my bike.

UIL
Cameron was disappointed that she didn't get a UIL letter on the day we got out for Christmas. She said they'd handed them all out that day, so that meant she didn't get chosen for the team.
Today, she comes home with her letter. :) She's been chosen for the 5th grade team, Ready Writing. The meet for our school teams is on March 7th at Cain Middle School (right next door to our elementary). However, the team practices on Thursday afternoons, which is when Drama Club meets - so I've got an email in to the team sponsor to see if something can be worked out.
Today, she comes home with her letter. :) She's been chosen for the 5th grade team, Ready Writing. Accomplishments
Cameron's had the palate expander since early November. At her last checkup (Friday), the ortho said that we are done with the key turning. Yay! She'll be getting it off on Wednesday and doing molds to make a retainer to go up there. Sometime soon, she'll get a partial set of braces.
The girls have decided that they don't want to play soccer this spring. I enjoyed it when we played, but it was just too much with 2 practice schedules and 2 game schedules last fall. I'm game for anything that simplifies my life right now, so I appreciate that they realize that they can do without it.
They also decided that instead of going to Kickapoo Kamp this summer (349 miles away), they want to go to Sky Ranch (61 miles away). Sky Ranch is closer, cheaper, has girls AND boys, and the cabins are air conditioned! Oh yeah, they also have a bus service from around here, so I don't even have to take them out there myself.
Logan has been selected to be on the 3rd grade UIL team. Sometime this spring, they will go to an academic competition, and Logan will be on the team for Story Telling. They also have Ready Writing, Oral Reading, and Number Sense. This is our first exposure to UIL, so I don't know much else about it.

Happy New Year!
I know, I'm a little late. But I haven't had much to write about lately. While most of the world has gone back to work/school, we're still on vacation here. The kids don't go back to school until Thursday of this week.
We skipped piano/voice lessons yesterday because I didn't feel like taking them - and we were having a small ice storm. The roads weren't freezing, but the trees and power lines were. Luckily, we didn't lose power, but I hear that lots of people in Dallas did.
We got the cast list for Peter Pan via email this week. Cameron will be playing the part of Winkie, a narrator. They start rehearsals after school on Thursday. They will be doing 2 performances in May, on a date TBA.
I'm letting the girls mull over whether they want to play soccer this spring or not. Registration is this month. It's very difficult to navigate the practice/game schedules - and with two of them, a lot of times they both have to be in different places at once. It was pretty hectic in the fall, and I don't know if I'm up for the stress of it all again. If they really, REALLY want to play, I'll do it - but I'm making them think it over for a little while first.

Merry Christmas Eve!
Cass is working and the kids and I are hanging out at home. I've made gingerbread cookies for Santa, and now we're just waiting for bedtime!
My Dad used to have this train under his tree, but he gave it to me for Luke a couple of years ago. Luke has been asking for days about it, but finally he insisted and I got it out for him. If we can keep it on the track, I'm sure it will run until its batteries run out.
