Sky Ranch

So this week, Cameron's 5th grade class is going on a field trip. They are spending 3 days/2 nights at Sky Ranch for their Outdoor Education Program. Seriously - I have to pack her up like she's going off to camp this week.

They will stay in cabins there (which Cameron points out, are air-conditioned) and during the day they will go to outdoor classes. Limnology, Forces in Nature, Ranch, Life, and Terrestrial Ecology. The evening activities will consist of Campfire and Star Program. They will also have recreation time, where they can do water slides, soccer, volleyball, hiking, soda shop, souvenirs, etc. All of this will fulfill the teaching of Science TEKS for the Science TAKS test they'll be taking in April.

Where in the world was this kind of stuff when I was in school? Seriously.

This same type trip is a rite of passage in our school district. 6th Graders go to Outdoor Lab for an entire week in the foothills of the mountains. The hope is you draw a warm time of year. Every time anything is metioned about 6th grade curriculum here, the first thing parents immediately respond with is the fierce desire that Outdoor Lab not disappear. Apparently its gone on for decades.
